Sunday afternoon at 2pm ushered in the much anticipated opening of Camp Winniaugwamauk this summer. With a mixture of veteran and 1st year campers, our cabins filled up and friendships began to form anew. With a veteran staff, seasoned in the ways of fun and fellowship, we looked forward to a week of good ol' fun along with spiritual renewal and an experience of faith.
Sunday's activities included mixers to get to know one another, meeting to establish our schedule, rules, and ways of doing things here at Camp Winni, supper, and Camp Opening Ceremonies. At opening ceremonies, each cabin chose a name, made a cabin flag, and wrote and performed their cabin song. These are our cabin names.
The Holy "Molahs", Shamoanah's Mighty Oak Trees, PLAARD, The Twirling Trifecta, and The Great 8 (each cabin member in this cabin also now has a superhero name!).
We rounded out Sunday night with our first campfire and learned that we've got a group of singers!
All in all, a great 1st day at Camp Winniaugwamauk.
Monday's update:
Monday morning, we began our day with devotions, introducing ourselves to the idea of the fullness of peace-- peace is great when their is no conflict, but it's much more challenging when we are called to be peace-makers. Yet we still find the courage to respond! After breakfast, we participated in our first hour of recreation class. Campers chose from kayaking or a general recreation class. Theme class centered around the concept of Shalom. Peace is complex, yet we can grow in peace through intention and faith. We practiced coming to agreement in groups through a silly game--hopefully, it got a little bit of the point across!
Our afternoon was filled with rest period, waterfront activities include the massive waterslide down our hill and swimming, and our first meeting with our ARTS classes. The choices for this hour are arts and crafts, hand-drumming, and drama.
The evening brought some friendly competition--though cabins sure do want to win. Our "In It to Win It" Camp Olympics features many games from the popular show Minute to Win It along with blindfolded musical chairs and a couple of rounds of trivia. Cabin competitions run throughout the week and are intended to build cabin spirit. It works! And it gives us a chance to talk about winning and losing graciously and having good sportsmanship all the time-- this is a challenge for us all, huh?! After campfire it was time for lights out. 10:30 is the goal... I'm not so sure all of our cabins hit the mark on that time last night!
Camp is up and running, and we're supported by lots of well-wishes and prayers as we go. May peace and love be with all, especially those who are reading this and supporting our experience here. ~SHALOM
